The Fundamentals Behind CBT for psychosis is our signature online course that is available to work through at your own pace, on demand. It provides a foundational training for those licensed clinicians looking to gain competency in CBTp, but it also provides a useful stand alone training for frontline staff looking to learn techniques to help them work more effectively with psychosis and reduce burnout.

In response to your helpful feedback we have now relaunched this course in a new, updated and improved format with a downloadable workbook and 5 CE credits available. We are also offering 3 different versions depending on which type of CE credits you need: 5 APA homestudy CE credits, 5 NYSED SW self-study contact hours or 5 NYSED Psychologist self-study contact hours available on completion with passing grade. It is each participants’ responsibility to determine which type of CE credits are acceptable to their own licensure board and to whether there is a limit to the number of home-study/self-study credits they are permitted to receive in a renewal period.

This course will cover key principles that underlie CBTp and is beneficial to both licensed clinicians working towards accreditation in CBTp and to front line staff looking to increase their knowledge and skills in working with psychosis. By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe what psychosis is as it pertains to CBT for psychosis, listing typical myths about psychosis and being able to dispel these
  • Summarize the evidence base for CBT for psychosis, including key critiques
  • Explain the concepts of delusions and voice hearing as part of the spectrum of normal human experience
  • Demonstrate increased empathy for voice hearing and delusions by applying at least one empathy generating exercise
  • Describe the concept of “working within a delusional belief system” and be able to recite one reason why we do it

Truly enjoyed this training. It makes me excited to continue my training in CBTp with Dr. Riggs. I was intrigued through out the training and truly feel that I learned something. I was able to keep my focus as the content was smoothly presented.”

I thought this course was done very well. It effectively presented a foundation for the topic, and was appropriate in length and depth of content given it was a pre recorded, virtual course. I was able to maintain attention, which can be difficult in this format. I appreciated the variety of teaching techniques.”

I really enjoyed this training! I think it gives a great background on the fundamentals behind CBT for psychosis that will help to facilitate deeper learning of CBTp from engagement in further training. I especially enjoyed the voice simulation, beliefs, and video clip exercises. Those activities enhanced the active learning components of this training and were interesting and enjoyable to boot! I also liked the discussion questions that went along with each section. These questions helped drive the main points from the section home by applying thoughts on the topic-area. Such elements within the training helped set it apart from some of the various other online training courses that I have taken, which don’t include as many active learning components and activities. The training is pretty fantastic as-is.

Thank you for this wonderful training! I look forward to taking the other CBTp training courses that you offer in the future!

It was a fantastic introduction to CBTp and I look forward to taking the full training and becoming certified.

I learned quite a bit and had some questions that I’ve had for a while answered concisely. I feel more confident in beginning therapeutic training.

I found the module on working within the belief system to be especially helpful and I enjoyed how you incorporated the movie scenes to demonstrate the benefits to working within someone’s belief system. It helped me better understand what this looks like and how I can apply this concept in my work with patients.

I liked the various tools (video, quiz, discussion, experiential exercise) and the use of repetition to enhance learning.
