Let’s face it—getting set up in private practice is not easy and not cheap.

When you factor in working with psychosis, and doing so in a way that is safe for both you and your patients, it can feel even more expensive.

So, I am excited to share with you some of the resources I love and have found to be integral in my years of working with psychosis in private practice.

And many of them have very generously offered discounts if you sign up through this page (or follow the directions below)!

HIPAA Compliant Web-Based Resources

RingRx (HIPAA compliant VOIP phone service)

RingRx came to my rescue when I had signed a one year contract with another VOIP company that claimed to be HIPAA compliant and turned out not to be at all…

Designed specifically for healthcare, RingRx offers tailor-made solutions for therapists and clinicians in private practice.

The flexibility is incredible. You can set it up with one mailbox for your solo practice, multiple mailboxes for group practices, include fax, add text messaging, have forwards for your answering service, virtual reception, or billing, and more—everything you want and need for your practice.

And all for a very affordable price—way lower than any other company I’ve found (and I did a ton of research!), and with fabulous customer service.

It’s a small company that knows its niche, and does it well. They are super responsive to their help desk tickets. Which is what you need because heaven forbid your phone service doesn’t work right when your client is in crisis and you have to use your personal cell to call them and risk exposing your personal number…

You can get one month free by signing up with my referral code. Enter code 511 when you sign up on their website (or if you forget, just email them and give them my name and they will set you up for the free month).

Jotform provides HIPAA compliant web based forms that you can use for intake and assessment. I recently made the switch from using a back office company that provided their own webform solutions for my private practice to having to find my own and I couldn’t be more pleased with Jotform. Their forms are intuitive to create (you can just upload a pdf of your existing form and it will largely put it into the correct format which is very helpful!) They also integrate smoothly with many programs you may also be using such as Google sheets, Google Calendar, Convertkit or Constant Contact or Mailchimp, Dropbox etc. For example if you integrate with Google sheets you can set up formulae to score your outcome measures for you. And their HIPAA complaint package includes templates that are appropriate for healthcare like intake forms, notification of privacy practices etc. I have been using them now since January 2022 and it has been nothing but straight forward. HIPAA compliance is available on their Silver package which has more than enough space for all you need.

If you want to sign up with my link you can do so here.

They don’t advertise this on their website but if you sign-up for a free account and then upgrade to an annual paid one within 24 hours of sign-up, you will can get a 50% discount.

Person Centered Tech or PCT is a small company based in Portland, Oregon that provides comprehensive teletherapy and HIPAA security compliance training, tools, and support for mental health professionals.

They are run by a wonderful group of people who are all tech nerds and also licensed mental health professionals. I discovered them in my first year of private practice when I was terrified of making legal and ethical mistakes (like HIPAA violations!).

And I have worked with PCT extensively since then, getting to know the team quite well. Their dedication to supporting therapists in private practice is undeniable. And their knowledge of all things technological and HIPAA-related never ceases to amaze me.

PCT has membership programs for group practices and solo practitioners, which include full-risk analysis tools and office hours over Zoom to ask questions. They also have amazing telehealth training which I promptly shared with all my staff in March 2020 (when I still had a group practice). I now work with them as a solo practitioner and I can’t see myself ever working without them.

No specific referral code or link but the team said they’d be happy to offer a discount to folks who mention my name (or just give me your name and I’ll email them).

I can honestly say that if it weren’t for PCT, my anxiety over failing HIPAA compliance would have driven me out of private practice years ago.

Business Organization

An effective private practice is an organized one. And establishing the right systems so you are not stuck running your to-do list over in your mind is crucial to running your own business!

If you are someone who needs visual and tactile things—not just online programs—look no further. The 1Thrive system is not just a wall calendar, it is so much more.

As you know, I have been dealing with chronic illness these past 18 months. For me this means considerable brain fog, amnesia, and other cognitive impairment. I nearly had a full relapse my first week back at work after a month off. I was exhausting myself constantly running things in my mind! I am not exaggerating when I say that this system saved me from a relapse.

Have you ever been in the middle of printing a crucial document when your printer decides to run out of ink AND there’s no spare cartridge in sight?

This used to be the bane of my life! Until my old printer (which ate up cartridges like a vacuum cleaner) died and I invested in an HP OfficeJet Pro.

Their cartridges are not only super long lasting, they also have an “instant ink” service where you pay a set price per month depending on the number of pages you need. Plus they monitor your ink remotely and send you cartridges before you need them. Genius!

If you sign up through this link before Oct 31, 2021 you will get 3 months of instant ink for free!

Self-Care

Self care is non-negotiable! As clinicians, we need to support our wellbeing too.

Living with chronic illness for 18 months, self-care has taken on a very different meaning for me. Particularly because the majority of things we associate with self-care—taking a relaxing bath, exercise, cooking nourishing meals—were prohibited by my treatment team.

And then I discovered subscription boxes. Yes I know, about 10 years late to the game… 😉

Here are some of my favorites—again many of whom have offered discount codes.

Ipsy is my other go-to personalized subscription for makeup and beauty products.

Need bolder makeup for Zoom? A skincare refresh to support stressed entrepreneurial skin? Or relaxing downtime shower goodies?

Their highly individualized questionnaire allows you to request a beauty box tailored to your needs. And with three different sizes of monthly subscription boxes there are options to suit all.

Plus—as always—I love supporting a brand that aligns with my values. Ipsy actively supports equal pay, climate change, offers mainly vegan and diverse-owned brands, and engages in social inclusion projects (just check out their Instagram!). By supporting them, I know that others are being taken care of too.
